When Spinelli awoke the next morning in Maxie's bed without his clothes, he assumed they'd had sex, but couldn't remember it. When Sam found him alone on the docks trying to remember what had happened, she offered to ask Maxie point blank. Spinelli was later disappointed to find out that nothing had happened.

Sam took pity on her young friend and decided to help him build up his confidence. She coached him through weight training, but Spinelli gave up pretty quickly, fearing he had seriously injured himself.

Spinelli also enlisted the aid of Jake's bartender Coleman and former ladies man Dr. Patrick Drake. They each gave him advice on how to attract women. Sadly, the only women Spinelli was able to attract at Jake's was a high class prostitute and a beautiful lesbian.

When Kate interrupted them, Maxie assumed he had jumped her in order to prevent her boss from catching her looking at top secret photos. Spinelli went along with her assumption, realizing she would never take him seriously as a lover.

After another harsh run in with Sonny, Spinelli went to sulk on the docks. Nurse Leyla Mir (Fair Leyla), sans escort to a family wedding, asked Spinelli to accompany her. Although they didn't know each other very well, they had a wonderful time. She told him he was the perfect date. He became her hero that night when he defended her honor against a hateful racist.
